spending a little bit of quality time with my chairs and cats today. i managed to get my hands on 5 vintage herman miller eames shell armchairs. 3 with wool fabric, 1 with vinyl, and one without fabric but with missing shock mounts. i got them for a fair price, had my sister pick them up and my friend regina was nice enough to truck them out from toronto for me last weekend. i've been pretty excited for a not too ambitious restoration project. the vinyl is all cracked, the wool fabric is really dirty & has started lifting off of the foam as well. i stripped the fabric & foam off of two of them today and have almost taken all of the glue off of one of the shells. hours of scraping and tons of goo gone!
the upholstered chairs have holes drilled through the shells and no shock mounts, not my ideal, but i can live with that. (otherwise they would have cost wayyyy more) the H bases screw directly into the shell so i'm trying to decide wether i want visible screws, or to fill in the holes w/wood putty or something, and then epoxy on some after market shock mounts. i think i'm going to fill in the holes. now when i'm all done, i'll have five glorious cat beds. (for real, i want to find a original cat's cradle base and put in on one of the chairs to turn it into a literal cat chair. who can sit on such a low chair anyway? a cat. that's who.) process photos to come.
